Benefits of an Electric Fireplace

Your idea of perfect warm, cozy living rooms or dens always included fireplace mantels, but when you bought your otherwise ideal home, it did not include one. Fortunately, you have several options. Having a fireplace built is one, but doing so can be a time-consuming, messy and expensive undertaking. An electric fireplace is another alternative, and while purchasing one will not give you quite the same scents, sounds and sights as a traditional fireplace would, they do offer many advantages.

While traditional fireplaces have limits regarding where you can build one, you can place an electric fireplace almost anywhere even if you are not handy. While you can build some into a wall, others are portable, allowing you to set them up virtually anywhere. If you have always dreamed of having a fireplace in your bedroom, bathroom or any other room, this may be your best bet.

There is no need to chop wood or purchase expensive logs and fire starters if you have an electric fireplace. They operate solely on electricity, whether by plugging them into a standard outlet or hardwiring them inside of a wall. If you choose to hardwire your unit, be sure that you employ an experienced electrician to do the job for you, as your family’s safety is paramount.

On the topic of safety, when you install and use it properly, an electric fireplace can be a much safer option than a traditional wood burning or even a gas fireplace may be. You can hang stockings or set knickknacks on or near electric fireplace mantels without worry of sparks jumping from the flame and starting a fire. In addition, you can turn off the fireplace and go to bed without the worry of dangerous hot ashes that might still be burning. Finally, electric fireplaces do not present the hazard of carbon monoxide poisoning, which is a risk that people with gas or wood burning fireplaces must consider.

Although you cannot toast marshmallows on them or use them during a power outage, electric fireplaces might be just what you need if you are wishing for fireplaces mantels throughout your home.

One question how about the electric bill will it be high?

  2. It saves time in making a fire.

  3. @LOURDES yeah also save the woods

  4. Our village has its own electric so it is cheaper, and we use an electric fireplace to offset the gas bill. The electric fireplace allows us to set the thermastat lower, and only heat the one room we spend most of our time in. We usually only use the electric fire place first thing in the morning, and then at night watching tv

  5. A very good and interesting topic.. I’m just concern about my bill and the safety of my house though..

I would like to plug in a fireplace, instead of burning wood. But I too wonder how high my electric bill will be?

  7. Was thinking of getting one as I currently have oil heat. Thank you for the information!

  8. Debbie Langley Waddell says

I would enjoy an electric fireplace. I would especially like the mantel at Christmas time to display my grandchildren’s christmas stockings.

  9. Our electric rates are high I’d consider a gas firepalce is it exists.

  10. Leah Lucas says

We are considering buying an electric fireplace, we grew up with fireplaces in our homes, but with small children I am not comfortable with that idea so an electric one will be perfect!

  11. Stephanie Thompson (Free) says

A regular fireplace is very messy also. I think an electric fire place would be nice because I like to look at the fire, it relaxing, and at Christmas time it’s niece to have a mantle to hang stockings, for some reason.

..I had one a long time ago , maybe I will try it again.

My wife has allergies so the electric fireplace is better for her health. I like the safety factor too!

  14. Sandy Cain says

We can’t have a fireplace, as we are in an apartment. If I ever move to a house, though, I would get an electric one. There is something in the burning logs that I am allergic to – even though it’s pretty and cozy, a regular fireplace going makes me itch.

  15. We have portable electric fireplace 😀 it’s tiny and it’s safer than the real fire place. Safe for kids.

  16. Personally I haven’t seen any kind of fire place because of the hot temperature of the country.

  17. Jessica Cassidy says

We used to have electric fireplace but change it to a wooden one 🙂 It is more warmer and cozy 🙂

Well, I don’t have an idea about the electric fireplace.. First, I live in a tropical country. Second, I haven’t seen yet a fireplace.. LOL.. But, thanks for sharing and I think that would help once I move to Canada.

  19. I hope I can have a house somewhere where an electrical firplace is needed — somewhere cold!

I would definitely choose an electric fireplace over a wood burning fireplace, it’s much cleaner, for your home and for the environment.

My grandmother had an electric fireplace that made her living room so cozy and made her feel so much better in her retirement residence. My husband and I are considering getting a super-modern one for one of the walls in our condo as we cannot have a “real” or gas fireplace.

  22. I can’t have a legit fireplace in my apartment due to zoning and also just the architecture of the complex, the way the units stack on each other… so I’ve been looking at other options. I’ve found gel fireplaces, pellet fireplaces, and electric fireplaces to all be pretty worthy substitutes but I’ve been leaning toward gel fireplaces as they actually do have a real flame, it just burns very cleanly and with a smaller blaze. They also tend to have pretty sleek, modern glass designs so they look really cool 🙂 for overall heat output, electric seems to be the best bet, but then you have a ‘fake’ fire.

    Tough choice!

  23. Becky Schollian says

I’ve always wanted an electric fireplace. They are so beautiful, simple & sufficient. Even my Dr’s office has one. great post!!

  24. Marcia Lee says

I have a “real” fireplace, but my husband has stopped using it, saying that our heat is going up the chimney. I like the idea of the electric fireplace heating a room & not turning on the furnace while you are in that room.

  25. Christina Strapp says

This would be a good alternative. You don’t have to worry about the mess of a wood burning fireplace.

  26. BRENDA DWYER says

I WOULD LOVE TO WIN OF OF THESE ELECTRIC FIREPLACES, THERE SAFE, CLEAN & WILL WARM UP SMALL AREAS PRETTY WELL IM SURE.M & THEY WAY THE PRICE OF OIL IS A GALLON KILLS US, ITS MORE THAN GASOLINE AND THE OIL COMPANIES WILL ONLY DELIVER A MINIMUM OF HUNDRED GALLONS AT A TIME, SO IT CAN BE A PRETTY HEFTY BILL & REALLY DOESNT LAST LONG THROUHGH OUR WINTERS.
