DIY Tips For Cleaning Your Upholstery

Just like precious sands of time which slip through our fingers, there are certain pieces of furniture around our homes which are just as valuable and deserve no less than superior care from its owner.  The sofa is one home fixture which gets pretty much beaten up-what with everyone in the household using it- and it needs to get pampered with regular cleaning.  Although it’s always good to have upholstery cleaning done by the pros, sometimes you just have to get the work done in a jiffy, and doing it yourself is the way to go.

Before anything else, check the manufacturer label, so you’ll know the fabric content of your upholstery.   Synthetic fabric can be safely cleaned at home, whereas cleaning of upholstery which is comprised of at least 50% cotton is best left to the experts.

When dealing with coffee stains, mix together a little amount of dish detergent, vinegar and water, and sparingly dab on the stained surface.

For quick clean ups, you can use baby wipes to do the job.  These are surprisingly effective because they have just the right amount of soap and water to gently and safely clean upholstery.  Wipes also tend to evaporate fast.

Stubborn stains such as crayon marks can be safely removed by using non-gel toothpaste.  Carefully rub it on the stain, then wipe off with a damp cloth.

Any problem gets solved when dealt with the soonest possible time.  When your upholstered furniture gets a nasty stain, the best thing to do is to always catch it early on, before it gets worse.  If you wait longer, the stain will naturally set in, making it more difficult to clean.  If you take good care of your prized upholstery now by exerting effort to keep it clean, it will see you through more years to come.
