4 Biggest Reasons That People Stay In Unhappy Marriages

Rarely do people get married to someone imagining that one day they’ll be miserable.  Usually, people have the best intentions when they say their nuptials with their spouse, however, at some point down the road, things go wrong, and they lose sight of how they fell in love in the first place.

They become distant with each other and unhappy, and may never even speak at all.  Often one or both of them have an affair, yet they remain together despite their misery.  So, why is it that these people stay together in an unhappy marriage? Here are some of the most common reasons why.

Finances

Regardless of being unhappy in a relationship, two people can start to depend on a two-person income.  The idea of having to start paying for their lifestyle alone can be a scary idea to imagine.

One of the parents may be scared that they may have to pay child support which may be significantly high depending on the circumstances.  As a result, they’d rather stay in a loveless marriage than bother with lawyers and uprooting their comfortable lifestyles.

Abuse

When one of the people in a relationship is abusing the other whether it’s physical or mental, they may be afraid of the repercussions that could occur if they were to walk away from the relationship.

Abuse can cause a person’s fear to outweigh their desire to make a change.  They may be so afraid of the consequences of leaving that they’re willing to stay unhappy to keep themselves out of harm’s way.

Fear Of Being Alone

A lot of people may be afraid that they are too old or unworthy of finding a new relationship at this stage of their lives.  They feel like they wouldn’t ever be able to find anyone new, so the couple remains in a loveless marriage for the sake of knowing they’re not by themselves.

However much you may believe this, it’s never too late to start over and begin a new life.  Happiness comes from within and feeling safe.  Therefore, even if you were to be alone for the rest of your life, at least you have the freedom of doing it in peace rather than in a turbulent atmosphere when neither one of you wants to be there.

Religion

When a couple has religious views which forbid ending marriage, people usually refuse to see divorce as an option.  Because religion runs deep in a person’s sense of worth and morals, it’s often hard for them to imagine going against something which they so deeply believe in.

As a result, they remain married out of principle, even though they aren’t happy in their hearts.
