“Jazz singer Jane Roman Pitt’s oh-so-lovely album’s subtitle, “Unexpected Lullabies for All Ages,” is apt. Among the tender, off-the-beaten-path lullaby choices here, are the Thad Jones classic, “A Child is Born,” Neil Young’s “Barefoot Floors,” and this exquisite little art song hinting of magic and fairyland: “The Sleep That Flits (on baby’s eyes)” (text by Rabindranath Tagoe, music by John Alden Carpenter). Pitt’s original “Dance Like the Wind,” is a smooth fit; other soothing, well-chosen tracks include “Over the Rainbow,” “The Nearness of You,” and “Summertime.” The jazz arrangements and instrumentation here are A+, and the singer herself, who styles the songs with lilting vibrato and a soft vocal caress, is chief among the album’s unexpected treats. – Lynne Heffley ©2016 Parents’ Choice
Jane’s introduction to music came from sneaking downstairs at night to hear the classical chamber music her parents and their friends were playing, and later by listening nonstop to folk music, pop, and jazz from all over the world. She started to play guitar at 15, and began to sing and play at local coffeehouses, college campuses, and on public television as the resident folk singer. She has a graduate degree in music history and composition, and has published her classical choral music with Transcontinental Music in New York.
Her previous albums include the San Francisco folk-based “This Beautiful Feeling”; “Wind Off the Water,” recorded in Nashville; “Peace of the River,” a collection of original songs and standards featuring some of the best jazz musicians in the country; the award-winning “Midnight Lullaby,” produced by Grammy-winner Mac Gayden in Nashville.
Jane started collecting lullabies in preparation for her first grandchild. “Since the beginning of time, singing lullabies has been a way to express love and comfort. The genres and languages may vary, but the message is the same: “I love you, I’m here, I’ll take care of you, and now please go to sleep!”
“Road To Dreamland” is a soothing album of lullabies for everyone from babies to grown ups, and everyone in between. These jazzy sweet songs range from classic lullabies like “Summertime” to contemporary tunes by Neil Young and Brett Dennen.
Jane lives in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina, where she sings, writes choral music, and plays with her grandchildren. She also has been a teacher of Transcendental Meditation for over 40 years. Profits from this CD go to the David Lynch Foundation Women’s Initiative, which teaches meditation to women and children in challenging situations.
